If you’re tired of working in the corporate world, there are many other jobs you can try your hands on. One particular career you should try out is carpentry. If you’re looking for variety and excitement, you’ll be surprised to find out that working as a carpenter has lots of these.

Carpentry offers a variety

You may think that once you choose to become a carpenter, your options are limited. But no, you can actually work on many things other than houses. Choose from the following:

  • Bench carpenter or cabinetmaker – With this profession, you can be in charge of cutting and shaping wood products. You’ll get to work with some heavy cutting machinery that you can get from hardware suppliers, like power saws, jointers, and mortisers.
  • Carpentry assistant – This is where you can start your career as a carpenter. Here, you’ll get to learn more about the industry by becoming an apprentice to a more experienced carpenter. You’ll learn how to read blueprints, take measurements, and use machine tools safely and properly.
  • Commercial carpenter – If you want to work on large-scale projects like office, hotel, school, restaurant, and hospital construction, this job is for you. This will really stretch your skills as a carpenter because most of these projects demand precision. One minor mistake could already lead to huge delays.
  • Framing and residential carpenter – If you think you’re not up to working on large projects yet or you just want to focus on smaller ones, then you might want to work as a residential carpenter. With this profession, you’ll work on houses and apartments often building staircases, interior and exterior walls, decks, and roofs.
  • Industrial carpenter – Here, you’ll be working on large projects, too, like the construction of factories and other industrial structures. You’ll need extra training for this profession, though, since you’ll be handling structural support.
  • Woodworking machine operator – You’ll be in charge of operating heavy machinery used for shaping wood products.

You can work at home

As long as you have a large area at your home, you can do all of your work there, which beats having to drive through traffic to your congested office. When you’re working at home, you’ll get to enjoy the peace of not having any other person around. If you have the proper equipment, you can build birdhouses, furniture, children’s toy houses, wooden toys, signs, and other things you can think of.

You get to move around

A carpenter rarely sits down on an office chair to work. He’s always up and about cutting wood, building scaffoldings, or installing roof tiles. It’s not a sedentary job, which means that you’ll have more exercise than any individual working the whole day in an office.

A career in carpentry is exciting if you think about it. You get to build stuff like houses, condominiums, factories, furniture, among others. The immediate result of your efforts can be thrilling. They can even give you that sense of accomplishment that some people rarely feel in an office environment.
